Il a commencé à s'entraîner au judo à l'âge de trois ans. Il a fait ses débuts contre Alan Belcher lors de l'UFC 100 le 11 juillet. Malgré une fracture orbitale, il a remporté la victoire par décision partagée. C'était le premier combat dans la carrière d'Akiyama qui a été décidé par les juges. Le combat a également été récompensé par le titre de "Combat de la Soirée".
